Qualified Fletcher Pilates® Teacher
Primary Pilates Education: Fletcher Foundational Teacher Training Program, and currently a student in the Fletcher Professional Program.
Teaching Style: Supportive, Intuitive, Goal-Oriented.
One life lesson I’ve learned is that without challenge there is no growth. I will encourage my clients to grow in all of the Pilates Movement Principles just as I challenge myself to grow – with loving-kindness, encouragement, and persistence.
Everyone learns in a different way (visual, kinesthetic, auditory, etc.). It is up to me as a teacher to figure out the best way to present my knowledge of Pilates to each individual in order to help them achieve their goals. It is a fun and interesting process where I also learn from my client! I truly believe everyone can benefit from this work, and it is an honor to share it with others.
Additional Education/Training: Northwest Academy for the Healing Arts, Licensed Massage Practitioner (LMP); University of Washington, BS Biology.
Melissa's Pilates Journey
The first taste of Pilates I had was from an old workout video my mom had at home (Windsor Pilates). I thought it was fun and a good workout!
Later, when I was in college, I began consistently taking and thoroughly enjoying regular mat classes at the Intramural Activities Building. The instructor and I became friends. I continued to take lessons from her until she moved away to NYC, and I was very sad!
After that, there was a break of several years as I got busy with life, started practicing massage therapy, and dabbled in the CrossFit world.
The Pilates Into Life studio is close to my house, and as I would drive by, it was a daily reminder of how much I enjoyed Pilates. This finally inspired me jump back in. I started private lessons and classes with Teresa and was once again hooked!
,After about three years of learning, growing, and going deeper into my Pilates practice, I began thinking about taking my Pilates experience to the next level – teaching!
I have always loved teaching in any capacity and throughout my life held in the back of my mind the idea of becoming an educator. As I fell more in love with Pilates and considered what being a Pilates teacher would mean for my life, along with how it fit with my knowledge of the body from my massage therapy experience, teaching lined up with everything I desired and made perfect sense.
After I had this epiphany, I signed up for the Fletcher Pilates Foundational Program at PIL the next day, and I haven’t looked back. In fact, I loved learning the work so much that after testing out of the Foundational Program, I began the Professional Program. It has been a transformative journey, and I couldn’t be happier with my decision!
10 Questions with Melissa
Favorite fruit? Mango.
Favorite Pilates movement? All of the cats!
Favorite tunes for self-practice? Motown.
I take Pilates into my life by: Starting with your first lesson, Pilates gives you a new awareness of your body; how it moves, where it is in space, habitual movement/postural patterns. You begin to keep that awareness with you as you go throughout your daily life, noticing more and more, and changing those patterns that do not benefit you. For me, it has been a really eye-opening and transformative experience.
Interests outside of Pilates: Traveling the world; going for walks or jogs around the neighborhood, Golden Gardens and Carkeek Park; trying out new restaurants (or visiting old favorites); spending time at home (especially on the patio on a nice day) with loved ones; karaoke with friends; and strength training.
If I had an extra hour each day, I'd probably spend it: Sleeping :)

Dream day off in Seattle: It’s a warm summer day. I get coffee and a peanut butter cookie at Preserve and Gather, go for a walk or bike ride in one of the amazing parks in Seattle with a to-go picnic from PCC, have a Jungle Bird cocktail at Rob Roy in Belltown, and then delicious dinner with a sunset view at the Space Needle or without a view at Metropolitan Grill. Top it off with karaoke with friends in a private room at Rock Box!
When I’m not wearing Fletcher Black, I wear: Non-Fletcher black! Though lately I’ve been embracing more pink.
