Marilyn's Pilates Journey
I began my journey with Fletcher Pilates under the brilliant and compassionate guidance of Teresa Chikoore in 2012. I have always been active and enjoyed running since college. I was in the midst of rehabilitating an Achilles tendon surgery when I began taking private lessons. My range of motion and strength were quite limited and I had intense anxiety and fear of re-injuring.
We started with foot-work on the reformer and within eight sessions or less, I burst into tears when I realized how effortlessly I was able to get up on my toes and turn the garden hose on! It was the first time in over one and a half years of many therapeutic modalities that I could move so freely and trust my body again to support me.
When I was fourteen, I was diagnosed with scoliosis and began treatment with a back brace. Six months prior to that I had major abdominal surgery to remove a three pound ovarian tumor. In my early twenties I had three additional abdominal surgeries in order to become pregnant and eventually have a beautiful daughter. All of these events set me up for a weak “core”.
These early influences on my spine have been a challenge for me on my Pilates journey, however each session I am empowered by more ease, awareness, range of motion, strength and grace. It has been a journey of strengthening not only my body but my spirit and I am so grateful I landed on this path.

I take Pilates into my life by: Remembering my connection to midline. When things happen that throw me off of my center I can tap into the awareness I have learned through Pilates. I can ground through my foot centers in a literal way as well as metaphorically and from there connect to midline and the heart center.
If I had an extra hour in every day,
